Established in 2005, Friends of Butoke, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the community of Butoke in Democratic Republic of Congo. Friends of Butoke’s mission is to provide essential interventions in nutrition, food security, education, and healthcare, specifically targeting the area’s most vulnerable populations.
Butoke was founded by Dr. Cecile DeSweemer, who passed away in 2018 after a long period of failing health. Dr. Jean Lumbala Muamba, her adopted son and long-term partner, is Butoke's Executive Director. The name "Butoke" means light in Swahili.
